{ At the Office } mini series - episode 1

Fall is a great time to wear blazers, capes, tights, and ankle boots! Coincidently, these things are also very appropriate for the office, so I thought, why not start a mini-series featuring these great items as ideas for office wear.

I paired a long blazer with this dress that Julie bought for me at Urban Outfitters for $20. It's cute, comfortable, and works for the office. I am a huge fan of pairing high-end items with very inexpensive finds- when people would never think you are wearing something that only cost $5 or $10.

- Blazer: Kensie (TJ Maxx $149)
- Dress: Urban Outfitters $20
- Scarf: No Brand $10 @ Yesstyle
- Bootie: Pour La Victoire (TJ Maxx $69)
- Belt: Zara Belt $19.90
- Accessories: Chan Luu, vintage
- Handbag: Louis Vuitton

Bonus: French Nail with glitter

Kaiseki at Kyo Ya

Julie and I came up with the name Fabulosity Within Reach because we want to be as fabulous as possible within our budget. Kaiseki, a traditional multi-course Japanese dinner, is definitely not within most people's budget, but if you want to spend a lot of money on a really good meal, I would highly recommend it. Kaiseki is usually a formal dining experience in Japan. The food not only tastes good, it is often presented in the form of art and served by waitresses wearing kimonos. A reviewer on Yelp said he was eating tuna sandwiches for a month after going to a Kaiseki, but it was so worth the experience for him.

For my sister's 30th birthday, we went to Kyo Ya for their 10 course Kaiseki. The restaurant is very hidden: it's located in the basement of an apartment building in the East Village. There isn't a sign outside, and they don't even have a website!

I apologize for the quality of the photos, which were taken with my iPhone, as I forgot my camera.

Drinks

I can't go to a Japanese restaurant without drinking Green Tea.

Seasonal Sake - this was extremely smooth, light and refreshing-- just the right kind of sake for me and a perfect pairing to the meal.

Kaiseki

"Zatsuki" - Stuffed lotus root with fish cake. This tastes like a good fish cake- nothing amazing.

"Sakizuke" - Grilled eggplant and goma tofu with sea urchin sauce, which is literally three of my favorite Japanese foods in one dish. It was so good, everything just melted in my mouth. I ate it very slowly to savor the taste.

"Oshinogi" - Seared hamo pike conger sushi with seasoned cucumber. The waitress told us to eat one without the cucumber, then eat one with the cucumber to compare the taste. The piece without the cucumber has a slight, but nice, fishy taste to the sushi, but when the cucumber is added, it totally balanced the flavor and taste with a hint of crisp in the cucumber.

"Owan" - Snapper mousse ball and mushroom clear soup. This is similar to the Chinese fishball soup with mushroom soup base. The waitress suggested that we pour out the soup and drink the broth alone, and then eat the food afterwards. The soup went down smoothly, and I could feel the nutrients in the soup going into my stomach. I like fish ball and mushroom, so of course I enjoyed eating the remaining contents of the soup bowl.

The brooth from "Owan"

"Otsukuri" - Sashimi of the day, Part I. I'm not a big fan of this kind of fish- it's salty and fishy. This one wasn't bad, but I still wasn't a huge fan.

"Otsukuri" Part II - OMG, I died eating every single piece of the sashimi, as each piece was so refreshing and so sweet. Every bite was heavenly. Suffice to say, it was the best sashimi and the best sea urchin I ever had!

"Yakimono" - Grilled lobster, corn with shuto sauce in potato simmered sanma pike mackerel with arima sansho. The description alone says it all. The perfect bite for me!

"Nimono" - Steamed guji sweet snapper and togan squash with sudachi citrus thick sauce. This looked so nice and tasted pretty good. It's basically steamed fish with potatoes.

"Tomezakan" - Fresh fig with Japanese pear lemon vinegar sauce. It's fig in lemon sauce- what's not to like? It's the sweetest fig mix with a hint of sour. Sweet and sour are my two favorite flavors.

"Oshokuji" - Rice cooked with organic chicken and assorted autumn mushrooms in clay pot, nameko akadashi soup and pickles. I love clay pot rice- the flavor of mushrooms is completely soaked into the the rice, so it has the perfect aroma and taste. Paired with red miso soup, it's the prefect combination! How happy would you be if you came home to a perfect clay pot rice with miso soup for dinner?

Dessert
Sweet potato creme brulee with shio whip cream, honey dew melon sorbet. I know this doesn't look or sound like the best dessert, but for some reason, the combinations of sweet and sour, the thickness of the creme brulee, and the refreshing sorbet just hit every single taste bud in my mouth. This was literally the happy ending. I would say I haven't had dessert this good in a long time!

Green for Fall

This is my first fall outfit of the year! The weather has been pretty warm, so I tried to delay wearing boots and sweaters. As much as I wanted to wear them, I kept telling myself to save them for the colder days. There will definitely be plenty of those in NYC!

I got this green top from a recent trip to Anthropologie, but then I wasn't sure if it was worth keeping. So I went into my closet and tried different pairings, and surprisingly this shirt pretty much goes with everything. For $14, I decided to keep it. My first outfit with this top includes this green skirt I bought at the DVF sample sale and brownish red boots-- which is the perfect fall color combination! Unlike the last post, this outfit is something I would normally wear.

- Top: Anthropologie $14
- Skirt: DVF $50 @ sample sale
- Bag: Martine Sitbon
- Bracelets: vintage and Banana Republic ($49, used old store credit)
- Earrings: $8 at Sun Wind
- Boots: Vero Cuoio $229 at Century 21 (love the color and comfort of these boots)

Zig-Zag Saturday

I woke up Saturday morning with day old hair. I was feeling too lazy to wash it, so I decided to to try a braid. After I finished, the braid pattern reminded me of the zig-zag top that I recently purchased from Anthro. The pairing is below. What do you think? This isn't my usual style, so I may or may not wear it again.

- Top: Anthropologie Two Rivers Tee on sale now $39.99
- Pants: Free People $59 at Bloomingdales
- Sunglasses: DVF $125
- Earrings: $8 Sun Wind ***
- Bracelets: vintage & Ann Taylor
- Booties: Thrift Store (Beacon's Closet) $16
- Bag: Vintage Gucci

*** Sun Wind became my secret jewelry store when I first started to obsess over earrings. The reason I keep going is because the store owner is so great to talk to, and she knows so many random facts about Buddhism, Nepal, and Tibet. She also has a unique eye for design, and when I have time, we play with different jewelry designs. It's fun!

The Good Old Days

I love Anthropologie, and I am a very loyal customer. Many of my favorite pieces are from Anthropologie, and I always feel comfortable and feminine in their clothes. Today's outfit is another one of my favorites from Anthro. When I first tried on this long floral skirt, it looked awkward, as the skirt sits high on my waist, and it shows my big tummy. I immediately thought it was not for me, but I loved the floral print and didn't want to let it go. I tried on other items, and when I put on this white blazer with the skirt, it totally worked! Even better: I had an excuse to purchase both items! My coworker Pat, who is in her 60's, loves this outfit. She said it's one of her all time favorites, as it's so different, and reminds her of good old days.

- Blazer: Anthropologie $59
- Skirt: Anthropologie $49
- Shoes: streets of Shibuya in Tokyo
- Necklaces: vintage
- Bracelets: Chan Luu and vintage
- Clutch: vintage Ferragamo

Escorted Night Out!!

Few of my mom-circle friends have been talking about getting together and going out to a lounge in NY and pretending for a night, to be single with no kids.  Of course I was totally in!  I also convinced my coworker Todd to come out with us (the rule being that with my friends, he be charming smooth talker and enteretain the ladies!)  His initial reaction was "What am I?  An escort??" ... and my answer being "Oh yes, that's exactly what you are!!" - he thankfully still agreed, and I must say he did pretty well!

As per usual with this group, we had to find a deal for our event!  We ending up finding a great deal on Gilt City for drinks and apps at the Toro Lounge which is located downstairs from the Plein Sud restaurant at the Smyth Tribeca Hotel.  Unfortunately, when we got there, we were told that there was a private event in the Toro Lounge.  They offered to honor the certificate at the Plein Sud restaurant, which turned our intended lounge experience to a nice dinner.  (That just means we'll have to go out again - Yay!)

What I wore

- Dress:  Anthropology Junebug Dress on sale now with add'l 25% off
- Cardigan: no brand, Loehmann's
- Belt: Michael Kors
- Shoes:  Elie Tahari
- Necklace: forgot the brand, from Gilt.com
-  Bracelets: vintage and handmade at Bryant Park Christmas Fair

The Food @ Plein Sud

The food was delicious my first time at Plein Sud for lunch when it first opened.  However, this time, the food was just not as good as I remembered it to be, it was a slight disappointment, but the company made up for the slight disappointmet.  3 1/2 stars from me.

This rice ball dish was our favorite of the night!
